A visit at Kölner Dom

Like painted in the sky

5.7.2012 - Since we've been in Germany , we have seen many exciting and spectacular things, but my favorite so far has been the Kölner Dom. An amazing spectacle in itself, the Dom seems even more fantastical in comparison to the ordinary shops and restaurants that surround it, so much so that the Dom looks almost painted on the sky itself.

We were graced with the opportunity to take a tour through the less public areas of the cathedral which included being outside on the roof and sometimes on scaffolding around the towers. From this vantage point, we saw the beautiful Köln skyline. I was struck by the beauty not just of the Dom but of the city itself. Going into the ornate and awe inspiring sanctuary of the church, I felt oddly connected to the hundreds of thousands of people over the years who have said a silent prayer there.

In this way, the Dom did not seem like a cold, stone antique, but rather a living and breathing entity who has watched over the people of Köln since its first stones were laid hundreds of years before.
